Repetitive Transcranial magnetic stimulation (RTMS) is a safe, painless, non-invasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain, spine area, or even peripheral nerves, to improve neurological symptoms. Approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), TMS usually is used as a supporting treatment to improve recovery.
A series of RTMS treatment may be up to 10 times, each of which may take around 30 minutes to complete. You may be asked to sit or lie down, depending on the area to be treated. The doctor will place an electromagnetic coil against your scalp (or any other area that needs to be treated) to stimulate the nerve cells in the area. Please let the doctor know should you experience any pain during the procedure.
You may not receive this treatment should you have:
- A coil implanted in your brain, or cochlear implant
- Deep brain stimulation implanted in your head
Make sure you let the doctor know if:
- You are currently pregnant
- You had a heart attack within the past 3 months
- You have had a brain infection
