Women’s reproductive health has become an increasingly important issue, especially in the context of International Women’s Day on March 8. Among the most common conditions affecting women are uterine fibroids (myomas) and adenomyosis—both involving the thickening of the uterine muscle, which can significantly impact quality of life.
Globally, fibroids are estimated to affect around 40% to 80% of women of reproductive age. In Indonesia, the numbers continue to rise, with approximately one-quarter of cases requiring surgical intervention. However, many cases go undetected in their early stages, as they often present with no clear symptoms.
According to Dr. Sigit Pramono, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at RS Abdi Waluyo, fibroids and adenomyosis share similar characteristics, as both involve abnormal thickening of the uterine muscle. These conditions can occur in various areas, including within the uterine cavity, and may even affect surrounding organs such as the bladder or intestines.
Symptoms to watch for include painful menstruation and excessive bleeding. Therefore, women are encouraged to increase awareness and seek early medical evaluation, especially when experiencing such signs.
With advances in medical technology, more modern and minimally invasive treatment options are now available. One of them is Focused Ultrasound Ablation (FUA), also known as High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), which has been implemented at RS Abdi Waluyo.
HIFU therapy is a non-surgical procedure that involves no incisions and does not require removal of the uterus. It uses high-intensity ultrasound waves to precisely destroy fibroid or adenomyosis tissue. Notably, patients do not need to undergo open surgery, as the procedure is performed under light sedation (anxiolysis), allowing them to remain conscious throughout.
Prior to the procedure, patients undergo Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to map the condition of the tissue in detail. This ensures that the treatment is both safe and accurately targeted.
To date, RS Abdi Waluyo has successfully performed HIFU therapy on approximately 300 patients, demonstrating its effectiveness as a modern treatment alternative.
In addition to providing advanced medical technology, RS Abdi Waluyo also supports government efforts to improve women’s reproductive health through education on healthy lifestyles, including maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and undergoing routine health check-ups.
With innovations like HIFU, women now have access to safer, lower-risk treatment options that help preserve their quality of life—without the need for major surgery.
