Rezum: A Minimally Invasive Treatment for Prostate Enlargement (BPH)

Rezum is a relatively new, minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or non-cancerous prostate enlargement. In this article, we’ll discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Rezum therapy to help you make a more informed decision when it comes to managing BPH.

What is BPH?

BPH is one of the most common non-cancerous conditions affecting men globally. It’s estimated that nearly 90% of men will experience this condition as they age, particularly by the time they reach 85 years old. An enlarged prostate can significantly reduce quality of life, causing various urinary symptoms that can impact not just the patient, but also their partner.

Understanding the Rezum Procedure

Before discussing the pros and cons, it’s important to understand how Rezum works. Rezum is a modern therapy that uses water vapor to destroy excess prostate tissue.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia using a cystoscope inserted through the urethra, with no incisions required. A small handheld device delivers steam generated by radiofrequency into the enlarged prostate tissue. This steam causes the targeted tissue to break down, and the body naturally absorbs it over time, resulting in a reduction in prostate size.

As the extra prostate tissue shrinks, the urethra opens up, relieving BPH symptoms.

Benefits of Rezum

Some of the main benefits of Rezum therapy include:

  • Minimally invasive: no incisions are needed
  • Preserves sexual function: unlike many traditional procedures, Rezum typically does not affect sexual performance
  • Short- and long-term results: improvements in urine flow, bladder pressure, and emptying are often seen within 2 weeks. Urgency, frequency, and nighttime urination generally improve within 3 months, and many patients experience complete relief of symptoms over time.

Potential Drawbacks of Rezum

However, there are also a few important considerations:

  • Not suitable for all prostate sizes or shapes
  • Requires catheterization for 3-5 days post-procedure due to initial swelling
  • Possible discomfort during urination for 4-6 weeks after the treatment, sometimes with blood in the urine or semen (this is common with other procedures as well)
  • Cannot be performed on patients with a penile prosthesis or urinary implants

Making the Right Choice

During your consultation with a urologist, they will go over the pros and cons of the Rezum procedure in detail. You’ll also have the opportunity to ask questions and address any concerns you may have.

Your urologist will assess whether you are a suitable candidate for this minimally invasive treatment. If not, they will suggest alternative treatments tailored to your specific condition.
