Jakarta now has the first specialized treatment center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in Indonesia. Located at Abdi Waluyo Hospital, the center focuses on chronic autoimmune conditions such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. If left untreated or improperly managed, these conditions can lead to serious complications, including intestinal inflammation, blood clots, and even death.

The IBD Center adopts a multidisciplinary approach and utilizes advanced diagnostic technology to manage complex cases that have previously been difficult to treat comprehensively within the country.

The IBD Center brings together a diverse range of specialties, including gastroenterology, digestive surgery, clinical nutrition, psychology, and hepatology. Routine diagnostic procedures include stool analysis, endoscopy, CT scans, and MRI, followed by treatment through medication, biologic therapy, or surgery.

JAKARTA – Jakarta is now had the first specialized treatment center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in Indonesia. Located at Abdi Waluyo Hospital, this center focuses on chronic autoimmune conditions such as ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, which, if not properly managed, may lead to severe complications including intestinal swelling, blood clots, and even death. The IBD Center adopts a multidisciplinary approach and advanced diagnostic technology to address complex cases that have been difficult to manage comprehensively within the country.

“We have made IBD a primary focus because public awareness remains very low,” said Prof. Dr. Marcellus Simadibrata, a gastroenterology specialist and key figure in the development of the center.

The IBD Center integrates various medical specialties, including gastroenterology, digestive surgery, clinical nutrition, psychology, and hepatology. Routine diagnostic procedures include stool analysis, endoscopy, CT scans, and MRI, followed by treatment through medication, biologic therapy, or surgery. Holistic care and continuous monitoring are key to enabling patients to live normal lives.

In its development, the IBD Center has established partnerships with world-renowned research institutions such as the University of Chicago. This collaboration includes discussions on complex cases, symposia, and mini-lectures.

Dr. Sutrisno T. Subagyo, Sp.PD-JP, the founding director of Abdi Waluyo Hospital, stated that the hospital continues to raise patient awareness of inflammatory bowel disease in Indonesia, provide access to innovative treatments, and collaborate with medical associations to enhance knowledge, diagnostics, and treatment. “This is the foundation on which we built the IBD Center—to improve care and deliver the best possible outcomes for our patients,” he said.
