Kidneys filter waste products from the blood and remove excess water from the body in the form of urine. If your kidneys do not function properly, it can lead to short or long-term kidney conditions that may be life-threatening. Chronic kidney conditions are commonly related to hypertension (high blood pressure) and diabetes.

Examples of kidney conditions include:

• Diabetic kidney disease
• Hypertensive kidney disease
• Polycystic kidney disease
• Glomerulonephritis (which can present as blood and/or protein in the urine)
• Fluid and electrolyte disorders

Any of the above conditions, if left untreated for a long time, could lead to end-stage kidney disease.
